From the moment Zhara Adeyemi joined New Heights in seventh grade, basketball became much more than just a game. Introduced to the program through her middle school gym teacher, Zhara stepped onto her first organized basketball team alongside girls her own age, quickly discovering a community where she felt welcomed, challenged, and supported. What began as a new experience on the court soon became a defining part of her youth.

Looking back, Zhara credits New Heights with providing opportunities that extended far beyond basketball. Through the program, she traveled to new places, built lifelong friendships, and developed the discipline that would shape her future. Weekend practices and games taught her the value of commitment, while the coaches and staff invested not only in her athletic development but in her personal growth as well. "I was putting a lot of time into basketball," she reflected, "and New Heights was putting a lot of time into me." That investment left a lasting impression, helping her build the confidence, work ethic, and support system she still relies on today.

The lessons Zhara learned as a student-athlete have continued to serve her well beyond high school. She says New Heights reinforced the importance of succeeding in the classroom and developing strong time management skills—qualities that became especially valuable as she transitioned to college. Like many first-year students, balancing academics, athletics, and personal responsibilities felt overwhelming at times. But thanks to the relationships she built through New Heights, she never had to navigate those challenges alone. One of those relationships was with New Heights alumna Emily Florville, who became a mentor and source of encouragement throughout Zhara's own journey at Le Moyne College. For Zhara, having a strong community to lean on made all the difference, demonstrating that the support offered by New Heights doesn't end at high school graduation.

Today, Zhara remains connected to many of her former teammates, including those she first played with years ago, a testament to the bonds she formed through the program. She also strongly believes in paying that support forward. "Everyone has something to give," she says, explaining that giving can take shape in many forms: offering advice, encouraging younger athletes, or simply lending a helping hand. Her commitment to giving back reflects one of New Heights' core values: developing leaders who strengthen their communities long after their playing days are over.

When asked what advice she would offer current New Heights student-athletes, Zhara's message is simple: respect the game, have fun, and take it seriously. It is advice rooted in her own experience, reflecting the balance of joy, discipline, and opportunity that defined her time with New Heights. As she continues building toward her future, Zhara's story is a powerful reminder that the impact of New Heights reaches far beyond the basketball court, equipping young people with the relationships, life skills, and confidence to thrive wherever their journeys take them.
