March 2008 -- Student Athletes of the Month
Matt Grossbard
Pearl River High School
11th Grade

Matt Grossbard has been having a great junior year. He has had a strong year in the classroom and his team wrapped up a successful season. Matt has been an honors level student and is taking 8 courses this year. His grades have all been in the 80s and 90s and his lowest grade this quarter has been an 82.

Matt helped lead the Pirates to an 18-5 record and a semi-final berth in the Class A playoffs. He demonstrated leadership throughout the season, and he also was a team leader in scoring and assists.

Matt has begun to generate interest from coaches at some top academic university, and he will have many college options next year if he continues to excel in the classroom and on the court.

Ariel Guzman
Our Lady of Victory Academy
11th Grade

Ariel Guzman has shown consistent improvement in school this year. She has brought her GPA up by 6 points from the 2nd to 3rd marking period and now her average is an 83.3. She has been working hard at New Heights to improve academically and she is an active participant in both our SAT prep program and the Academic Support program.

Ariel also had a terrific season on the court this year. She helped lead her team to the semifinals of the Catholic league playoffs, and she was awarded with All-League and All-County honors for her efforts. Ariel averaged over 10 points a game and her guard play and leadership helped fuel the team’s success.

Ariel has been a constant presence at New Heights - working hard to improve both her academic and basketball skills. Her effort and commitment will pay off for her as she looks to complete her junior year and begins to prepare for college.

Congratulations!
