April 2008 -- Student Athletes of the Month
Jayvaughn Pinkston
Bishop Loughlin High School
10th Grade

Jayvaughn Pinkston has shown great effort and commitment over the past few months to become a true student-athlete. He has been consistently improving in the classroom. Jayvaughn has been actively involved in the New Heights Academic Support program and his grades and performance in the classroom has consistently improved.

Jayvaughn also had a very strong season on the court. He helped lead Loughlin to a 21-6 record and a semi-final berth in the CHSAA City Championships. He was a team leader in every statistical category and for his efforts he was named 3rd Team All-CHSAA. He demonstrated effort and leadership throughout the season.

Jayvaughn has been working incredibly hard both on the court and in the classroom. He is already receiving interest from colleges and he will have many options if he continues to improve as a student-athlete.

Nishi Tavernier
Bronx High School of Science
11th Grade

Nishi Tavernier has had a tremendous junior year at Bronx Science. Nishi’s report card this year has been nothing short of amazing. In the last marking period, she earned 6 As and 1 B. In addition to having an A average for the whole school year, Nishi has not had one lateness or absence on her report card for the entire year! She also works hard at New Heights to maintain her academic excellence and she has been an active participant in our SAT prep program.

Nishi also had a terrific season on the court this year. She helped lead her team to a 17-1 record and a tie for the Bronx A League Championship. Nishi averaged over 15 points per game and nearly 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game, and she was one of the top guards in the PSAL A Division this season. Nishi’s leadership and versatility helped Bronx Science to one of their most successful seasons ever.

Nishi is the consummate student-athlete. She works incredibly hard to be both a strong student and a strong athlete. She has already started to receive interest from some top colleges around the country.

Congratulations!
