Bernard Bowen
Program Coordinator

Bernard coordinates College Bound programming for our high school boys, is a Head Coach, and operates our Saturday Skills program. Bernard began with New Heights in June 2008 when the Beyond Basketball Foundation (Harlem Kings) joined our organization after two years operating their own basketball and education program. Before he decided to dedicate himself to his passions of basketball and youth development, Bernard had a three-year career in corporate sales. In addition to founding Beyond Basketball, Bernard was a basketball program counselor at the Dalton School, coached the freshman team at Regis High School, and was the Head Coach of the USBL Westchester Wildfire in 2005. Bernard is a New York City native who attended Trinity Pawling prep school and is an alumnus of Curry College where he was the co-captain of their varsity basketball team.

Robyn German
Education Coordinator

Robyn joined New Heights in May 2007. She coordinates New Heights' education programs, with particular attention paid to ARC, High School Assist, College Assist and Summer Academy. Prior to joining New Heights, Robyn worked for StreetSquash as the Assistant College Prep Coordinator and for The College of Mount Saint Vincent as an Adjunct Instructor and Writing Tutor. Born and raised in New York City, Robyn attended St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts through the Wadleigh Scholars Program. Robyn holds both a BA in Journalism ('03) and Master's degree in Higher Education ('05) from the University of Maine.

LaKisha Hoffman

LaKisha joined New Heights in September 2008 as a Program Coordinator focused on services for our female middle school student-athletes. Prior to joining New Heights, LaKisha was a Youth Program Specialist & Basketball Coach at Asphalt Green, where she organized recreational programs in NYC public schools and ran basketball clinics for neighborhood youth. Prior to moving to New York, LaKisha was a Youth Counselor at Maryhurst in Louisville, Kentucky and a basketball coach at the Blue Chip Exposure Camps for six years. Raised in Chicago, LaKisha attended the University of Louisville, where she played varsity basketball, earned a BA in Psychology with a concentration in Social Sciences, and was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

Michelle Lozada
Director of Finance & Operations

Michelle Joined New Heights in September 2007 and is responsible for internal operations and fiscal management at New Heights. She was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the South Bronx. She has had several years of experience in Immigration Law and battered women services, as well as working as an executive assistant for a charter high chool. Michelle holds a BA in Accounting from Lehman College and is working towards a Juris Doctor from New York Law School.

Rock Rosa
Program Coordinator

Rock coordinates all of New Heights programs, paying special attention to family relationships and sports-education integration. Prior to joining New Heights, Rock spent 8 years as a Program Coordinator in the Children’s Aid Society’s Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program. Born and raised in New York City, Rock has more than 15 years of coaching and youth development experience.

Richard Souto
Executive Director

Richard joined New Heights after five years as the Associate Executive Director of Groundwork, Inc., a community-based non profit organization providing youth and family services in East New York, Brooklyn. At Groundwork, Richard was responsible for program operations serving over 600 children and 1,000 families annually. Prior to Groundwork, Richard worked in corporate development and private investment in multiple industries including healthcare, manufacturing, and information technology. Richard’s last position was Vice President of Elucid, Inc., a subsidiary of a private investment firm with a diverse portfolio of entrepreneurial and established businesses. Richard has been involved with several non profit organizations as a volunteer and board member and currently serves on the Junior Committee of the Prospect Park Alliance. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Milano Graduate School for Management and Urban Policy of the New School University and has assisted multiple social entrepreneurs in the start up and development stages of their respective organizations. Richard has a B.S. from Boston University, an MBA from Baruch College of the City of New York, and completed the Columbia University Institute for Non Profit Management Executive Level Program.

Ted Smith
Program Director

Ted oversees all New Heights programs, including College Bound, Saturday Skills and Summer Academy. Born and raised in New York City, Smith played professional basketball in England from 2000-05. While in England, he worked as a Project Analyst at ARK (Absolute Returns for Kids), a social investor in charitable children’s projects. He received his Master’s Degree in Evidence-Based Social Work from Oxford University (‘04). Ted also did extensive youth development and coaching work in schools and community programs in the greater London area, and wrote a weekly basketball and community news column for the BBC website. Ted received his BA in Psychology from Yale University (‘00). As a student-athlete, he was a basketball Academic All-Ivy (‘00) and District 1 Academic All-American.

Lauren Swierczek
Director of New Heights-Riverdale Partnership

Lauren acts as a liason in the newly established partnership between New Heights and the Riverdale Country School. She will serve as the Director of the New Heights Summer Academy, in addition to serving as the Director of Community Service at the Riverdale Country School. Prior to joining New Heights, Lauren resided in Charlottesville, Va. Lauren received her BA in Sociology ('00) and her Master's in education ('06) from the University of Virginia, where she was a member of the Women's Basketball team. Upon graduation, Lauren served as the Director of Basketball Operations at UVA from 2000-2003. She then went on to work and coach basketball at St.Anne's Belfield School, and taught and mentored at Charlottesville High School.

Adam Berkowitz
Interim Athletic Director

Adam Berkowitz currently serves as the Athletic Director. Adam is also involved in many other facets of the organization, including coaching, fund development, events and public relations. Adam is a graduate of Dartmouth College (`93) and has his Master’s Degree in Communications from Fordham University. He is also the Deputy Sports Editor at the New York Daily News and has coached youth and high school basketball for the past 15 years.

Jessica Villaplana
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Jessica Villaplana is the Coordinator of the Girls Basketball program at New Heights. Jessica is a real estate attorney in New York City. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, where she played varsity basketball. She also played professionally in Puerto Rico before returning to New York to earn her J.D. from St. Francis College. Jessica launched the Girls Basketball Program at New Heights in 2001. She also runs numerous clinics and developmental basketball leagues for elementary and middle school children in NYC.
