2011: Scenes from the Court
New Heights enjoyed great success on the hardwood in 2011, as our boys and girls teams recently finished the most successful season in the program history. New Heights fielded a total of 14 teams for both boys and girls in middle and high school. All of the teams represented themselves well both on and off the court, and demonstrated teamwork, hard work and commitment throughout the year. Highlights include:
-Our U17s Boys Blue team, led by head coach Rahme Anderson, finished the summer ranked #21 nationally in the Five Star Basketball rankings. They played in the championship game at the prestigious Adidas Invitational in Indiana televised nationally on CBS Sports Network, losing a close game to nationally ranked Florida Rams. The team also won several other championships throughout the year, including Spring Fling event, the Joe Brown Memorial and the New England Championships. Our U17s White team, coached by Dave Brown, also had a very solid summer on the court playing in front of countless college coaches throughout the spring and summer. They had several impressive showings, including a Championship title at the Hall of Fame Invitational in MA.
Our U16s Blue team, coached by Athletic Director Kimani Young, was the most highly decorated in program history. This group, most of whom have been together since the 7th grade, won five championships and finished the season ranked 7th in the country. The most impressive title came at the Adidas Invitational in Indianapolis. The team also won championships at the Hoop Group Summer Classic, Baltimore Elite Invitational, the Providence Jamfest and the End of Summer Classic.
TheU15s team, coached by Shawn Mark and Adam Berkowitz, was crowned the champs of the Gym Rat Challenge and had strong showings in many other events.
Our girls’ teams also shared similar success on the court. Our senior high school girls team won the Spring 2011 Rose Classic, the most prestigious girls tournament in NYC. Our high school girls teams also won championships and had Final Four appearances in several others. The U16s girls team, coached by Rock Rosa, won the Blue Chip Penn State and Slam Fest. Our U15s team, coached by New Heights alum Ava Thomas, had a successful year as well and the team showed the greatest development of any of our HS teams throughout 2011.
We are also developing solid student-athletes on the court with our middle school boys and girls teams. Our middle school teams also enjoyed great success in 2011 winning several local and regional tournaments throughout the Tri-State area.
Additionally, graduating seniors Cori Coleman, Ashley Gomez and Antonia Smith also won the inaugural NYC 33 FIBA 3-on-3 girls basketball tournament held this summer.
