Antonia Smith, New Heights Class of 2011, is a remarkable young lady who truly embodies the spirit of a New Heights student-athlete. Antonia grew up in a housing project near New Heights’ previous office in the Bronx. She joined New Heights in the 5th grade and recently completed her 8th year with New Heights. Through the High School Assist program, she was able to enroll in the Dwight School, a private high school on the Upper West Side. Throughout her time at Dwight she excelled both academically and athletically. She graduated from high school in June with a GPA of over 85 and led her basketball team to a league championship. With support from the College Assist program, she will be the first member of her family to attend college. Antonia has decided to take her talents next year to St. Peters College in New Jersey where she will play the combo-guard position and will earn a full Division 1 athletic scholarship.
Jermaine Sanders, New Heights Class of 2011, has been involved with New Heights since the 7th grade and has been a leader in the program ever since. Even in middle school, Jermaine was a talented student-athlete. With the support of New Heights, Jermaine enrolled at Rice HS in Harlem. Jermaine is a great example of a young man who was focused and committed to his goals. Every day, he would travel over an hour each way to school because he wanted to be successful on and off the court. Through College Assist, he was an active participant in both the New Heights tutoring and SAT program. He finished his high school career as a 1st Team All-Star member and with a NY State Championship. He also led his New Heights team to numerous titles throughout his middle and high school years. After graduating from Rice in 2011, Jermaine earned a full scholarship to attend the University of Cincinnati.
